Oxford Dictionaries named “toxic” its word of the year for 2018. It is used to describe not only relationships, but also politicians, workplaces, cultural events and stress. Oxford Dictionaries defines toxic as “poisonous”. But what lies behind that poison?

Toxicity in a team is an excessive charge of psychic energy. It leads not only to burnout and stress, but also to high staff turnover — and has even brought down huge corporations.

Toxicity in an organisation has its upsides too: fast growth, new markets captured, competitors attacked. But all of this is fuelled by the emotions, feelings and psychic energy of employees thrown into the furnace. There are ways to fight toxicity — and that is what this lecture is about.
